Question about opening 'handshake'...

So, I always wondered what the handshake is that they do during the opening: they cross their arms and shake hands to the theme song. I just saw a photo from the 1960s of a civil rights protest and the people were standing in a line, holding hands with their arms crossed. Is there a name for this? Was it some old school sign of solidarity or brotherhood? I googled it ad nauseum and I can't seem to find any info.

It might be. I remember at my grandfather's funeral, there were some Masons there and they did a similar gesture.
