Is this any good?
I have listened to some of Bob Newhart's comic 'strips' and found them hysterical. I was wondering if this programme was any good, worth buying. What kinds of modern tv programmes are like?

sharePersonally I think "The Bob Newhart Show" is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I was born 5 years after it went off the air. I cant think of any modern sitcom that could compare to the show other than to say the unique satire and sarcasm has not dated, only the 70's furniture and clothing.
shareI just got Seasons 1 and 2. They are hilarious. Every episode is great. This has to be one of the funniest shows I've seen.
shareHeck, yeah! The Bob Newhart Show was one of the funniest comedies ever. It featured fantastic writing, great character acting, and believeable stories. Newhart was wonderfully deadpan and the psycholigist vehicle allowed him moments to tap into his stage act.
The cast was a true ensemble and had great chemistry together. They each took center stage for episodes and were more than joke machines.
This show came from a very fertile period of television comedy that included All in the Family, The Odd Couple, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the Carol Burnett Show. Each featured great writing, character-based humor, and ensemble casts. Aside from the clothes, decor, and a few cultural references, they are not dated. Definitely worth the money and the sets are reasonably priced. Season 2 includes commentary from Bob Newhart, Marcia Wallace (Carol), Jack Riley (Mr Carlin), and David Davis (co-creator and producer).
Does anyone know which season has the episode where Bob goes on TV and is interviewed by Ruth Corley???Thanks!

It's either second or third season, can't remember which, but it is on one of those DVD's.
I was a small kid when this came on the air and it was one of the few shows I was allowed to watch, along with Hawaii Five-0, the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. I remembered it being very funny and now I watch it as an adult and I still think so. One of the best things is the hilarious fashions, but of course the writing and characters are all excellent. Definitely worth the money. I can't think of any modern sitcom like it. It's too intelligent :)

I highly recommend it.
As a kid, it was one of my favorites and it still is today. It's great to finally have it on DVD, so I no longer have to worry about my VHS tapes wearing out.
The quality of the show was pretty consistent throughout it's run, so if you enjoy Season One, Seasons Two and Three should not disappoint.
Good? No....its GREAT! So much better than just about any comedy since, except "Becker" and "Fraiser".
"The only person to celebrate Valentines Day the right way was Al Capone!". John Becker, M.D.
I totally concurr! It is NOT slapstick humor geared to 15 yo's w/potty humor-You have to think about it sometimes and then you get it.Adult humor(Read intellegent)ANd its not one half hour of verbal insult after another-It belongs to a rare select few Sit-coms that make u think-Becker-Frasier-Taxi-Night court-Barney miller-Sanford and Son-Dick VanDyke-Home improvment-and it holds VERY well(writing)With the advent of "Mash"tv shows got either preachy-or-ugly w/put downs-Rosanne/Benson-or syurpy-full house/family matters-And most mid 90's sit coms had this form-men are dumb-precocious teen/near teen-absurd friend(usually female)And bright witty put togethere female who can handle it all-VOMIT CITY! THIS SHOW ROCKS!!!!!!

I love the Bob Newhart show. I was only 2 when it premiered, but watched as a little kid, and then reruns later on. I have been buying the DVDs, and now, MY 5 year old and 2 year old actually ask to watch it. It is smart and so funny, has great atmosphere, and is good-natured. Timeless and so enjoyable.
