The floor the Ladies and Gents Department is on changes throughout the running of this MASTERPIECE. Sometimes they're on the the 1st, while others they're on the 3rd or 4th, never the 2nd. Why does this happen? You'd think the producer's could remember from season to season.
If you watch the episode His & Hers (S1, Ep5) you see a shot of the lift and the indicator of which floor it is currently on - there are 4 floors, Basement, Ground, 1 & 2.
Mr Mash however then tells Captain Peacock that he is just about to paper the fourth floor.
If that is the case then where are the Staff Canteen, Boardroom & Young/Old Mr Grace's office????
There are probably more floors than the lift shows. It is normal for a shop lift only to show the floors that the public has access to. Although it probably goes to the others with a key.
If that is the case then how come Mr Rumbold says that he is in charge of the 3rd floor which contained the ladies & gents dept?? (German Week - Series 3, episode 5)
Another possible explanation. In Harrods not all the lifts go to all the floors. But also you must remember that this series along with hundreds of others has inconsistencies.
you see the mens department looking out of rumbolds office in one episode on fist floor, then later one other epoisode rumbold is on 3rd floor, the aparrtment episode mrs slocombe puts her furniture on 5th floor so there is at least 5 floors
you see the mens department looking out of rumbolds office in one episode on fist floor, then later one other epoisode rumbold is on 3rd floor, the aparrtment episode mrs slocombe puts her furniture on 5th floor so there is at least 5 floors in series 9 episode 1 harman says he is going to the canteen and points downwards and same episode miss belfrage says they are on 4th floor and in episode 5 of series 10 the club is on 4th floor which is the mens/ladies dept
Remember these shows were produced at a time when there were very few video recorders in existence. They were expected to be watched once, and then either the BBC would wipe the tapes or they would be repeated perhaps once a few years later (the BBC had restrictions on repeats). So they didn't worry too much about little details.
but the words at the beginning of the show clearly says that menswear, lingerie etc are on the first floor - you'd think that would be a reminder of where they were, considering it's in every episode.
You also have to realize that they don't number the floors like we do in the states. We have the first floor at ground level, where as they have the ground floor, and then the first floor is the next one up (our second floor).
