SIMILARITY WITH NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET FILMS
Anyone see similarities between "Vampire Circus" and the Nightmare on Elm Street Films?
shareAnyone see similarities between "Vampire Circus" and the Nightmare on Elm Street Films?
shareYeah, I see what you mean, the plot-line about the children as targets of the monster in punishment for the parents' actions in the past. The child-killing Count Mitterhaus in VAMPIRE CIRCUS was staked by a band of parents and years later his cousin Emil and the Gypsy Woman avenge his death by attacking the children of the townspeople. The only difference is that in ELM STREET, the same monster (i.e. Freddy Krueger) is responsible for all the wrongdoing.

I haven't seen this movie. But reading the similarities listed above, I'm assuming that the killing has nothing to do with the children's dreams and nightmares. Killing kids on account of a vendetta is a really good plot. I am eager to see this film. Plus, Corri is great.
shareI have a theory that the hall of mirrors scene in Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is heavily influenced if not taken directly from the hall of mirrors in 'Vampire Circus'.
shareYeah, you could well be right with your theory there, dennyben. Having said that, VAMPIRE CIRCUS itself is highly evocative of the filmic works of both Cocteau and Melies so, although it is seen as amazingly ingenious, there is evidence of much cinematic influence. I still adore it, though, it's one of my absolute favourite Hammer horror films.
shareJosh, yeah VAMPIRE CIRCUS is a crackerjack horror movie. The kids are killed by the kinspeople of the staked Count who visit the village 15 years after their parents have murdered him. They exact their revenge in the guise of the circus, promising thrills and delivering death. Naturally, the children are excited by the prospect of going to the circus which makes them very easy prey. Clever idea and quite disturbing. You like Corri? WOW! You'll love her here, she is outstanding and makes the most of her part as the vindictive child-killing Gypsy Woman.
