This isn't the freak show its title might suggest, but a fast-moving, imaginative Hammer vampire tale of punishment and revenge. It's set in an isolated plague-ridden town in 19th-century central Europe that welcomes the arrival of a circus, until the revenge of the vampire Count Mitterhouse becomes clear. Adrienne Corri's intense beauty shines like a beacon in the murky atmosphere, and the delicacy of mood collapses into blood-spurting horrifics towards the end.
STATUS: CULT CLASSIC. (Dim the lights and cuddle up under a blanket, "Garlic optional!")
