Poor Dialog Between Hermie and Dorothy

Why did it take so long for Hermie to learn Dorothy's name? All they did was stand around. Where is the normal conversation? No "Where are you from? Where did you go to school?
What does your husband do? Where is he stationed?

Since this is a true story, we have to cough it up to Hermie being a very young, very naive, very smitten young man with a crush on an older married woman.

If she was older, frumpier, and her husband spent the summer on the island as well, he probably would have been as chatty AF.

Based on a true story - undoubtedly embellished. Women always get better looking and the story exaggerated in print or on the screen.

Well, Mr Raucher didn't paint himself as particularly tall, good looking, intelligent, witty, or a good fighter or ladies man, so any embellishment would seem to be minor to the main plot of the story which was him falling in love with a married woman.

As for the real Dorothy's looks, well I can't think of any woman I've ever seen that approached Jennifer O'Neill for looks, even today. Still, for young Hermie to be smitten by an older woman, she must have been quite decent to look at.

I actually found the dialogue throughout the whole film to be kinda boring. Or maybe because the actors weren't particularly good. The actress who played Dorothy is one of the most gorgeous women I've seen but we never really got to know her much, other than she is incredibly nice and completely in love with her husband and maybe a little too naive when some 15 year old kid is showing so much interest in her. Do I understand why she had sex with Hermie? No. Do I blame Hermie for taking advantage of her? A little. It's kinda sleazy, no matter how you look at it. But he didn't initiate it. He did what most kids that age would have done. Especially with a woman that looks like her.
But it's a film that means well and I'm sure the nostalgic factor of that period resonates with many people. It just didn't work that well for me.

Much of the dialogue in the movie is stylized. It's not always meant to be strictly naturalistic.
