Joel said this film (parts of it anyway) was an inspiration for MST3k
some similarities:
-Joel(yes I'm aware that's his real name) rhymes with Lowell
-robots as companions
-the checkerboard insignia on the uniforms
-visual similarities between the Valley Forge and the SOL

Yeah I was a HUGE MST3K fan back in the day! I knew that Joel had used SR as a basis for MST3K, and it is quite obvious the spaceship was inspiration. Apart from what you mentioned, I can't really recall anything else, though.
A few years ago I was just looking at random stuff on youtube, and I came across a clip someone had posted of a MST3K episode. The kid who posted it was like, "look at this! It's hilarious! Apparently this used to be on TV or something!" I was rolling my eyes & groaning. It was probably before the uploader was even born...but still, it was on Comedy Central (and later, the SciFi channel), it won Emmys, and a Cable Ace award as well, I think. It wasn't obscure or anything!
