What's the deal with the crappy DVD cover art?

It looks like a cheap comic book cover!?

It is a bit reminiscent of the illustrations for 2001. Also reminds me a bit of the ones for Logan's Run and Star Wars. Perhaps this appealed to sci-fi fans in the 70's?

This is the artwork for the actual movie poster in 1972, and was not created for the DVD specifically. This DVD art only shows about 1/2 of the total poster art.

This was the artwork used for some earlier DVD releases. I prefered the original.
