UH OH its being remade!!!

hi folks, i read in empire that this is being remade - officially - why do they keep remaking classics, they should remake films that didnt work, and try to make them better!

Once I got over my apoplexy, I searched the website and could not find mention of this. Do you have a link?

Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle "Dixie"?

And, of course, it will be some big-budget, barely coherent movie which will completely miss the point of the original film. It'll be directed by some tweaked out 30-something director who has neither watched nor cares about the message of the original.

Doug Trumbull was 29. He was a cinematic wunderkind, who wanted to make a science fiction film with a message, and he succeeded IMHO. Whoever gets a hold of the remake is going to remake it in name only.

I heard Beyonce was going to do the songs for the remake.

Well I'm completely in the minority here apparently but after watching this movie the only thing I felt was how much I wanted to remake it. While the story was spectacular I feel that the directing and the acting was pretty poor. Throughout most of the movie Bruce Durn looked more like a robot than the robots did. His expression barely ever changed. The music wasn't terrible but a little variation in the soundtrack would've been nice. I can only listen to Joan Baez while watching nature so much in an hour and a half. I think this movie is more relevant now than ever but that it would reach a much wider audience with a better script and better acting and directing. I'm sure many of you will disagree, but I really feel now would be a good time to remake this movie. A friend of mine and I might sit down in the next few weeks and start drawing up a script. I want to stay as truthful to the original story as possible but I have to go back and watch it again so I can note down any changes I might want to make. I'd be interested in listing them here and seeing what people have to say. Anyway feel free to get annoyed with me, but it's just the way I see things.

Hi stricoff,

I'd be very interested to see what you will come up with.

I like Bruce Dern's lack of emotion / expression as he was picked to be on the mission because he was amongst the most stable and risk-free men chosen to be in space for the time of the mission. While the other guys were a bit more reckless, perhaps his lack of participation and seriousness towards the maintaining of the forests combined to make him do what he did. All his emotion just came out at once, in the wrong way.

Please sit down with your friend and write up something!

Regards,

Mike.

Darn Remakes!

Oh dear. Why remake something that's spot on anyway? It's bound to be seen to be inferior to the original classic so they're on a hiding to nothing.

If you read the trivia, it describes the original ideas for the film revealed by Trumball and I feel those ideas could make a very enjoyable film on its own.

I (also) checked the Empire website and couldn't find any mention of a SR remake.

There was a mention in Billboard (or some other industry paper) of a remake considered at least ten years ago. It was to be directed by Simon West (Con Air).

No solid remake news? That's just as well. For me, there's only one Freeman Lowell, and that's Dern. A sequel, though, could provide some interesting possibilities.

I agree. Poorly executed, but so much potential. Prime candidate for a remake.

Al: Who wouldn't be tense? This music could make Will Rogers punch a nun.

no proof of remaking? just a guy starting a rumor?
anyone find anything? This story is not worth remaking. I like it a lot, but it's like a short story. Not amazing gotta remake it again material

I just saw a remake of this film...with Legos. It didn't hold up. Time to move past this idea.

Remake?

I don't know...

The film was notable for its special effects and being a proving ground for some who would work on later sci-fi epics.
That would be its classic category. While the effects were great for its time, they look mediocre compared to those of today.

So what's left?
The story. Which doesn't make much sense.
No trees on earth? Nothing would survive.
