It was 1972

1. You had to be there
2. You had to be there
3. You had to be old enough to understand what you were seeing
4. The mid 60's into 70's were the beginning of the enviromental/ecological movement
5. Lots of pop sci-fi lit being made into average or less than average films

I enjoyed it then, I enjoyed it again today. My only criticism was the music. I didn't like Baez then, and don't now. Couldn't stand that "folk" crap from the 60's and 70's. Glad it died out. Now, if only Rap and Hip Hop would die!

There's no need for apologetics. Anyone with half a brain understands the context. Others don't care no matter how hard you try to explain it.

I think the most important thing the OP was trying to convey is that Joan Baez sucks as badly as rap and hip-hop. Even then, it's my opinion that rap and hip-hop have a slightly higher listenability to them than Joan Baez.

You had to be there.

My "#3" key is broken so I'm putting one here so i can cut & paste with it.

Never understood the hate for her. There are far more annoying artists from the period.

reply

I put Baez up there with Mary from Peter Paul and Mary. Annoyingly flat voices cutting through the air like an air horn.

The music does seem dated now.

I have nothing against Baez, but her singing (or any singing) was really not suitable for this movie.

It is not a lack of understanding of the times, and its not an anti-green stance that makes me dislike this movie. The movie is just bad. The story is retarded, the acting is pathetic. The main corrector is absolutely unlikable with no redeeming qualities. Seriously, the movie does more to cast environmentalists in a bad light...apparently environmentalists (as represented by Bruce Dern) are all stupid, spoiled narcissists who do more to damage the environment in our ham-fisted attempts to 'save' it. Pretty insulting in my mind...

it was too loud in the mix. if you turn it down to half volume whenever she starts wailing, it fits much better, and works WITH the movie instead of jumping out, blaringly mixed, steam rolling over the movie. I don't like those songs or her singing, but after turning down the volume, it fits, works, makes it a little more touching to me.

Sad the audio mix was poorly done.

Just watched this movie for the first time the other night. When I heard the song, I thought to myself, sounds like something Joan Baez would sing. I didn't know it was actually her singing until now reading this thread.

Remember.....Baez did a rap record
