Have to go down with the ship? I know Lowell said that he Huey wasn't working well enough to help Dewey, but I thought Dewey could at least use the company.
I mean, it didn't seem like Huey was in any pain, using up too many resources or depressed from a loss of purpose; he was just a little gimpy.
I agree, it seemed mean to take his companion away. I came to the board to post the same question.

Uh... it's a robot. I know it's easy to athropomorphize the little computerized boxes, but in the end, they were just robots, programmed to do what they did.
I'll admit, when i saw this as a child i cried at the end. Bawled like a little baby, I did. But seriously, I was a child without any real working understanding about robots or computers. It seems silly now.

Lowell was a selfish prick. Sending Dewey off all alone like that, pissed me off when I was kid and pisses me off even more now.

Well, maybe Lowell thought that Huey was so damaged that he would eventually break down and come to a complete halt, diverting the other little guy (if they were programmed to feel, the other little guy could be diverted from his tasks by grief) from his job taking care of the plants.
I could be a morning person if morning happened at noon.
The other robot showed compassion for the other robot, when it didn't want to leave it's side, while Lowell was attempting to fix it.
Lowell showed understanding of this, and let it stay there.
Lowell did not see them as just robots, and therefore it doesn't make sense that Lowell would separate them, when it was not needed for anything else.
