I love this movie. I actually welled up with tears at the end when I saw it many years ago. And then? Joan Baez starting CATERWALLING. And ruined EVERYTHING.
Her faux-operatic bellowing is so awful, it makes me not want to watch it again.
The odd thing is that I -love- the soundtrack by Peter Schickele and I feel guilty in writing the above because I know he looooooooves her singing.
I think it really dates the film and it is generally intolerable (just as I found Baez intolerable back then). Luckily the movie is great so I can forgive it.
I don’t need you to tell me how good my coffee is.. .
You hit the nail on the head. The really sad part (for me) is that Trumbull's miniatures (in 2001 and here) have a timeless quality. If I could erase -her- it wouldn't feel dated at all.
When I saw this movie, I was surprised to see P.D.Q. Bach in the credits. I've always liked Schickele's classical music parodies, I had no idea he also did film scores.
But you're right, Baez's wailing is annoying. To me, it was the final nail in the coffin of what was a mostly disappointing movie regardless, even though I usually enjoy Bruce Dern's performances.

He was the string arranger on many of her albums. He is also well known as a composer of 'serious' music.
And he is -crazy- about her voice. He has been a champion of old time 'Americana' folk music since forever. I believe he once said that her voice is like the perfect blend of operatic and folk. Which (for me) is like saying the perfect blend of cyanide and strychnine.
Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement... Listen, kid, we're all in it together.
LOL! I can totally see why you would feel that way but I Absolutely LOVE the soundtrack! Soooo dated but it's adorable, this movie is so strange because it's actually really adorable but when you look at the concept it's really frightening !!!
