Was Watching This on YouTube.
It’s nice revisiting this after all these years, as I must have seen this only once and I was a young child at that. Based off of the movie, I found myself doing some research off of the things that were shown in this movie. That hand symbol that was on the wall with what I thought was a diamond in the center of the palm was actually an eye I believe. I was confused because it didn’t have a pupil painted in the center and it was sideways on the hand.
It’s called a “hamsa” and it’s actually an Arabic symbol used to ward off the evil eye. From what I learned it’s common among both Muslims and Jews who also use the symbol. It’s a holy symbol used to ward off evil so what was Tonino doing with it on his wall? Who knows? His if you look closely had a blood trail painted from the center of the eye trickling downward.
When Norah looked into the supers apartment, his wife and family had one too, itbwas there on their wall in that Santeria setup that they had underneath he cross so again with it being a symbol of holiness who knows what Tonino hoped to achieve with it. It obviously didn’t help…him anyway, so that’s obviously a confusing part of the movie as it’s clear he couldn’t have believed in or used it as intended. His hamsa was profaned as he perverted its meaning by having his eye painted blood red with the red blood trail leaking from the eye.
One more thing about this film that didn’t make sense to me is we learn that Tonino’s father was the one who killed him when he discovered his son’s crimes, the murders and everything. That in itself is ridiculous, because didn’t Tonio’s mother tell Norah that he left them after he was born? So the father who left all those years ago came back to kill his only son after how many years? Excuse me but there would be too much of a disconnect for him to even want to do it. Heck I guess he really didn’t take off, he must’ve been hanging around close by somewhere. Oh yeah & he did it to “remove that disgrace from the family” not because of what his son had done.
Moving on, it was implied that he took him somewhere else to kill him and he also hid the body there too. From what I understand about hauntings and spirits not at rest, that should mean that he wouldn’t be in the apartment to harm anyone, especially Joel. His spirit would be bound to where he was killed, well that’s how it’s supposed to work but hey it’s only a movie and of course he was there.
Regarding Tonino himself, would it be plausible for him and Joel to have had the friendship that they had without Joel even suspecting anything? Would it be plausible for them to have any friendship at all? Considering he was a psycotic murderer where you’d have to wonder why he would even have anyone live with him in his apartment, especially Joel? Without running into any conflict with him or eventually wanting to hurt or even kill him. I’m assuming that sharing the apartment with Joel didn’t stop him from doing what he was doing which was killing women so one would think “something” would’ve leaked out to where Joel would’ve taken notice.
Seriously everyone else HAD taken notice, it’s not like it was a secret that Tonio killed all those girls. The police knew it, his family knew it, the whole neighborhood knew it & they even knew (Thanks to Veronica) that he was now in Joel. It’s not exactly he was clandestine about it. But as an impulse driven bloodthirsty murderer it makes sense he wouldn’t have been big on planning and covering his own tracks. How everyone but Joel wasn’t cognizant of this fact I’d really love someone to explain to me. After Joel’s outburst in Norah’s apartment with his “Spanish” directed towards Veronica, she “had” to have known right then and there if she didn’t already. After all she “believed”.
If Tonino did have some kind of affinity for Joel, how could he then possess the guy and then through him make him hurt his own family? That’s rough but they you’re free to think what you will in regards to this.
