I saw in the background info. in the imdb posting that Flip Wilson was originally to play the role of the detective. I'm glad they didn't do that. I am with Spike Lee in feeling annoyed by the Hollywood pattern of "The Magical Negro" who heroically sacrifices his life to save a white person.

I did get fed up with Clint Eastwood's smart-aleck and unhelpful responses to everything the detective was asking.

It wasn't the detective that Flip Wilson wa supposed to play. It was David's buddy Al. But I agree, he was pretty unhelpful, and when he figured it out, he could have had the cops radio the sargeant so he knew what he was walking into!
