'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'...for Evelyn?
It's strange, because I was rewatching this movie last night, and it occurred to me that the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" that plays during the love scene might actually be more closely connected with Evelyn, who earlier watched the couple go off into the woods.
I always thought it was some generic pop song just ladled over a montage...but the lyrics are kind of "grand scale" and obsessive. I wonder if Eastwood thought that when he chose the song, and it it actually does have anything to do with Evelyn's point of view. It's not an obvious connection, but I wonder if there is one.
I mean, Eastwood and Mills' characters have a really up-and-down relationship, and the words don't really seem to apply to them, at all.

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were gifts you gave
to the dark and the endless skies
The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was then at my command
My love
The first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last til the end of time
My love
The first time ever I saw your face
Your face
Your face
Your face
