Can anyone tell me why the police would have released Evelyn? She has done much damage and nearly killed someone. It looks like a plot device to me and just ruined my suspension of disbelief.

If I remember correctly, she escaped. She just lied to David about being released.

Evelyn attacks David. He calls the police, and the detective tells him that she had escaped.

I just got done watching the movie and, no, she did not escape. She was released. Dave even asks who the hell is running that place since they let her go. And she wasn't in jail. She was in a psych ward.

She was very crafty. Had sane and insane moments. Apparently in her sane moments she convinced someone she was okay. Psychological science wasn't the same back then as it is now.

Psychology was never science. And it is just as full of shit now as it was then.
