homo-erotic undertones of the film / meaning of the ending (spoilers)
Bundayabba has men everywhere. In fact, only two women are really seen at all when hundreds of men are filmed. There are also fit, sweaty, topless men everywhere. There are dark back-rooms filled to the brim with sweaty, jostling men. Men are shouting, shoving and pushing each other. Men are enjoying the company of other men. Women are not around, and the ones that are (Jeanette) are spurned. John keeps the company of a group of burly, boisterous men for several days drinking and hunting. While few people seem to be talking about it, this is all surely intentional and I believe done to amp up a homo-erotic vibe in the film. In the context of the early 1970s, homosexuality was not widely accepted.
To me, this film is primary about one man's conflicted internal sexuality. He keeps up an external façade, but when he loses everything and descends into depravity he can no longer keep a lid on it. The first main manifestation is when Jeanette aggressively seduces him, which results in his vomiting then getting blackout drunk after to forget it all. Note that he was not drunk during the incident, only after. Something about Jeanette's behaviour violently repulsed him. The second is the infamous "implied" scene with Doc where they wake up half-naked and entangled on the floor. After this, he tries to flee / escape, but ends up right back in Bundayabba. He cannot escape himself / his own nature. This conflict eventually drives him to first a confrontation with Doc (who was not home, but I believe he meant to murder) and then a suicide attempt instead.
At the end of the film, he gets sent back to his original town, looking prim and proper again, with the original surly innkeeper. The innkeeper asks "did you have a good holiday?" John grimly says "the best," and walks inside. The innkeeper starts to smirk and laugh, as if he knows something John doesn't, or knows what John has really been up to. My interpretation is that the innkeeper sees right through John, and knows exactly what John is, even if John won't accept it himself.
