So am I to understand that the disaster was caused by blowing up the germ-carrying missiles, thereby releasing the plague into the upper atmosphere where it spread?

shareThanks, it's been a while since I've seen this. I remember Neville saving himself with the serum, but I had forgotten some of the minor details. I vaguely remembered some sort of flashback in which an Army guy explained that they were spreading the plague by blowing up the missiles.
