Why didn't 'The Family' ...

I love this film, but I've always wondered, Why didn't "The Family" just burn the two houses on each side of his?

Where scared of burning the whole city up, since no fireman's gonna put it out?

Their thinking processes were compromised by the disease. They weren't all that bright.

In the book he burns the houses next to him. I assume the only reason they showed houses next to hisqas due to not having a suitable location showing a house with those around it burned to the ground.
So you can give whatever reason seems reasonable because the real reason is simple logistics.
