The marrow of this film is its texture

Everything from the grainy, clipped out and pumped film stock, to the crumbling ruins of Italian architecture, to the tombs, stones, glinting darkness, the brittle decay of the undead and their rheumatic, crepitant wafting through space, to the tape saturated groaning, stonily dragging, rusted blade's edge grinding, wood creaking score is all of one stark, dry, bony, fragile, cragged and scabbed, entombed and fossilized arenose cascade pouring slowly into the hourglass of your trepanated skull.

Agreed. The creepy and unsettling atmosphere in this film is what makes it great as well.
