i thought it was bad from beginning to end, so...no - disagree

this movie makes the Simpson's halloween specials look scary

reply

The end was really bad but the rest of the movie was good.

99% of the time a hero is someone who is too cold, tired & hungry to give a damn.

reply

The end was great, It was Paula's revenge.... wow, how can someone hate the ending??? Its 70s gothic horror.

reply

Paula's revenge? What? She died!

reply

Her physical body died but her 'soul' was transferred to Roxanne, so she really didn't die. It was a perfect revenge (at least to her).

But my question was what was she going to do with Myles? Live with him as Duncan? Kill him? Somehow remove Duncan from Myles? I'm wondering if the original story it was based on was as opened-ended.

I think we're just gonna have to be secretly in love with each other and leave it at that.

reply

Paula said earlier that she didn't care if it was really Miles, she just wanted to stay with him.

reply

She sold her soul to the devil than killed herself to take the other girls body over (a body not even as good looking as her own). Now she will be with the body of the guy she loved not his mind. That body is no longer her husband, who was a jerk anyway. It's processed by someone else who had an incestuous relationship with his own daughter. It's not her husband she will be with but that nut case.

Basically there was no one in this film to care what happened to any way.

reply

The ending was horrific.

It should have ended with Paula in Roxanne's body revealing to Duncan in Myles' body that she switched bodies with Roxanne and killed her. Therefore, she did to him what he did to her: Kill the person he most loves.

Paula then would have had Roxanne's body, the mansion, and Duncan's fortune, since Duncan left almost everything to Roxanne in his will. No one would believe the so-called Myles if he told anyone that Roxanne is really Paula, as no one believed Paula when she was trying to explain to everyone that Myles was not really Myles.

Full circle.

The above reveal could have taken an extra three minutes and have given a very satisfying taste of vengeance.

Actually, I love your ending. I will pretend yours is the one as I'm wtching this old (fun) warhorse again. Good job, breinhardt-1!

P.S. Seriously a drag about the release on dvd without real perks.

reply

Thank you. I swore I thought it was going to end exactly as I said, and so did my ma. When it ended in that horrific way, we were both left with our mouths open.

reply

I thought that was how it DID end. Of course, I haven't seen it in many years.

"As the Philosopher Jagger said, you can't always get what you want."

reply

that would've been a great ending breinhardt!!!! I did not like the ending they had at all... all the succumbing to the devil (like Rosemary's Baby) was a very popular ending back when...

reply

I agree the ending was a disappointment, but at the same time, if this was made a year or two after The Exorcist, Paula would have got Myles exorcised, and they all would have lived happily ever after. So even though it’s a weak ending, it’s a lot more bleaker and original.

What amused me was how calm Paula was when the doctor revealed that her daughter had died.

reply

The ending was good as it is, following the "show, don't tell" rule of film making. The audience has already witnessed the vengeance. There's no doubt that Paula-in-Roxanne would tell Duncan-in-Myles what she had done. She just wanted to enjoy being in his arms for a bit. There's no use for us the audience to hang around to listen to her saying what we already know.

reply

I agree that Paula-in-Roxanne telling Duncan-in-Myles what she had done (after the film ends) is accurate, but not that she would enjoy being in Myles' arms for a bit since it wasn't really Myles but rather Duncan-in-Myles-body.

Her enjoying being in Duncan's arms can be explained by the fact that she was successful in the black arts at transferring her soul into Roxanne's body and now was going to be able to get her revenge on Duncan for robbing her of her husband, which is explained in this thread: https://moviechat.org/tt0067419/The-Mephisto-Waltz/58c72c465ec57f0478f32145/There-is-NO-INCEST-in-this-movie?reply=626afde01aa3173c84c93487

Good,thoughtful,and intelligent underrated horror flick,but yeah, I didn't like the ending,either.

reply

I actually thought the ending was the best part. The whole film isn't bad, but towards the end things REALLY start to get interesting.

reply

It's not that different from 'The Skeleton Key'. I enjoyed both.
