my mother told me about this film and i really, really want to watch/own it. apart from the dvd's on japanese sites, is there another way? does this come on tv at all? do video chains hold them? libraries? i guess what i'm trying to get at is: how rare is this? what is the best way to obtain it (ebay)? wait for the dvd like a lot of you? lots of questions, i know. pardon.
shareeBay is your best bet. I managed to pick up a copy of the Japanese release for only £5.50 inc. p&p... originals go for quite a lot more. You might also see VHS to DVD transfers going fairly cheap, but I don't know what kind of quality they are. Happy hunting... and viewing!
shareYou can get a copy made by Video Search of Miami on VHS or DVD. DVD cost $25 (or $20 if you buy 5 or more titles). There is a one-time membership fee. They deal in all kinds of movies out of release in USA (considered in the public domain). For example, BOCCACCIO 70 (the 1/2 in Fellini's 8 1/2) and THE PASSION OF BEATRICE, the modern French classic. The copy of MELODY was fairly good (better than off-the-air), about that of an old VHS, with some minor clitches. I also got a much better copy from Canada, apparently a copy of the Hong Kong release in English, with the 2-channel Dolby track and normal DVD features like chapter stops, menu, and chapter selection and musical number selection. That disc has a very good transfer (though not a digital restoration transfer) so the picture is fairly good with good color and excellent sound. Go to googlevideo and search for it on there (with 'Melody 1971' in the search box) It's not the best quality, and the size is annoying, but it IS watchable.
shareWhen I uploaded the movie I didn't expect it to be so blurry, but if you download the Google Video Player and watch it there it turns up much better.
shareI've downloaded Melody from google video. File size is 807 MB in avi format 480 x 276 pixels. I play it on my computer and the quality is quite good, not blurred. Surprisingly, I can play it on my PDA (Palm Zire 72s) directly without any conversion in good pic quality as well. Compared to Melody short video clips uploaded to youtube, this one is far better.
