Nostalgia Overload
Hi,
I have just seen the film (the last time was 36 years ago) Wow! what a trip down memory lane. Adverts for Double Diamond, the makes of cars, the fashion (yes i can remember wearing a cravat to a school disco) the hairstyles and the non politically correct teachers!
Obviously, this film means a lot to those of us who are of similar ages to the three stars of the film and went to school in the early 70s, but it is also a a piece of social history - a glimpse of what life was like back then. A more innocent age? I like to think so - children seem to grow up too soon nowadays and are exposed to far more disingenuous material in the media and the school yard.
It is a superbly crafted film with the high production values we came to expect from Puttnam films. Shot in a way that the viewer feels like they are almost eavesdropping into someone else's life for an hour or so.
Brilliant cameo performances from Roy Kinnear and Ken Jones as Melody's kind hearted father and Mr Dicks, the slipper wielding teacher, respectively.
Excellent sound track from the Bee Gees.
What more could a film need? The only thing i can't understand is why i've never seen it on TV (i guess it must have been shown at some point in the 70s?) with the plethora of movie channels on Sky TV now, surely its time for this gem to be polished off and be shown to a new generation of children- so they could see what life was like when mum and dad went to school way back when!
