U.S. MELODY status

For the curious, here's where things stand regarding MELODY.

MGM holds the chain of title on the movie from their acquisition of the Hemdale library years ago. However, since the film was a collaboration between Hemdale, Sagittarius, and David Puttnam's Goodtimes Enterprises, there are some legal ramifications that need to be settled first before they can do anything with it. I don't know what these are specifically - probably getting Puttnam or the producer who ran the now-defunct Sagittarius to sign off on a permission paper that would let MGM expolit it as they please. Paramount, from an ancient Viacom deal, have the TV rights to the movie until 2009, but it doesn't appear to be in any current movie package they are offering to cable or syndication.

The big stumbling block, as I see it, is going to be reclearing all the music for the film. Record companies have been asking for inflated license rates from studios on older DVD titles, and most times studios balk at paying them if they think that the cost of the clearance will be more than what they expect to make in profit from the sale of the title. And in this case, the Bee Gees recordings are owned by Universal Music, who have been notorious for this practice. Paramount's DVDs of GREASE and SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER were long delayed while they bickered over prices, and when they were finally released, Paramount deleted any use of Universal-controlled music beyond the films themselves: the FEVER documentary is stripped of Bee Gees music, and features no trailers.

Since I know some fervent MELODY collectors post here, if any of you have friends at these companies, those are the people to bug, beg, plead, and cajole. I can say that elements at MGM are fond of the film and would like to see it out, so that's a good sign. If anything, you may want to hint at any unusual goodies that can be located, like those Hyde and Lester reunions from Japanese TV, those would be great supplements.

You can get a copy made by Video Search of Miami on VHS or DVD. DVD cost $25 (or $20 if you buy 5 or more titles). There is a one-time membership fee. They deal in all kinds of movies out of release in USA (considered in the public domain). For example, BOCCACCIO 70 (the 1/2 in Fellini's 8 1/2)(P.S. just now freshly released in USA on a 2-disc deluxe DVD, with the 4th episode cut from the previous USA release fully restored) and THE PASSION OF BEATRICE, the modern French classic. The copy of MELODY was fairly good (better than off-the-air), about that of an old VHS, with some minor clitches. Was NTSC, Region free. I also got a much better copy from Canada, apparently a copy of the Hong Kong release in English, with the 2-channel Dolby track and normal DVD features like chapter stops, menu, and chapter selection and musical number selection. Was in NTSC, Region free. That disc has a very good transfer (though not a digital restoration transfer) so the picture is fairly good with good color and excellent sound. You can contact <[email protected]> by e-mail, Subject: Melody, and you'll get the current sale information. Please note there is a webside for the movie and Tracy Hyde: http:\\www.tracyhyde.net. There! Have I been helpful or what?

Thank you for your post. I, too, watched the film in the 70's and fell in love with it. I have been looking for information regarding the film for a long time and can not tell you how much I apprieciate getting this information. You think it's hard getting films out of release in the US, try living on the other side of the equator.

Just an updated note: Sony Pictures took over MGM/United Artists last year (2006).

It's also my understanding that Tom Cruise & his partner Paula Wagner are now running UA.

Who knows (wishful thinking on my part here), but perhaps they could get the ball rolling on a proper DVD release - FINALLY??!!!

From cleanest source by far, but copy is blurred--low digital resolution. Canadian bootleg (of Hong Kong release) is still the crispest DVD although from a slightly worn film source. Contact <[email protected]> by e-mail, Subject: Melody.

Thank you ever so much for the information. I knew Melody was big in Japan,
since the Canadian bootleg source (of the Hong Kong release) also sells a
reunion DVD of two Japanese TV programs in which Mark and Tracy are being
reunited decades later. The programs are in Japanese except the interviews
of Mark and Tracy. I would give nearly anything for a clean, crisp copy of
this movie. I have three grown kids who almost wore out the LaserDisc copy
I had while they were young.
