Is the school still there?
Just wanted to know if the actual school they film on location is still there.
shareJust wanted to know if the actual school they film on location is still there.
shareThe scene of the school in this movie was filmed in two places. One is Colet Court Hammersmith and another is 153 Hammersmith ROAD. There is no schoolyard of Colet Court Hammersmith any longer.

The exterior of the school was shot at Lambeth Palace in London, which of course is still there. To me, it's Melody and Daniel's school rather than the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury..

"The credits in the film are a bit misleading as the staff and pupils used as extras came from the Archbishop Temple School."
Not quite true. The pupils were from Temples, who were paid £1 a day. None of the staff appeared in the film. The only staff connections were Linda Carr (Head of Drama) whose boyfriend was one of the production staff, hence the connection into the school. Also Head of History, Peter Pryce who was a sort of official chaperone.
"It is now my understanding that all the school interiors and exteriors were actually filmed at Colet Court (153 Hammersmith Road).
This is correct."
"There was still an attached playground/field at the time (it is now a small park). The sports day may have been at Colet Court but I'm sure I saw a reference to it being filmed in Archbishops Park, next door to the school which used to use it for games in real life. I believe that sequence was shot in one day, so I doubt they would have used two locations. "
There were two "fields used". The one at the front of the archway, was actually across the road from Colet Court School. It had been part of a churchyard. The field used for the sports day was at the back of Colet Court School.
"They also took some publicity photos of the cast and pupils at this site to add to the confusion! Thats not to say, they did not film something here though? Anyone out there that was in it remember? "
I was not aware of this.
Archbishop Temples School was orginally going to be used as the location and filming should have taken place over thre Easter holidays. The film production company were unable to agree to the 10 day window which the School Governors wanted, hence the reason why another location was found.
The scenes with the extras were filmed over the East holidays and 4 weekends.
The house at the begining where Mark Lester lived was in Parsons Green near Fulham, while Melody lived in Clayton buildings, in Kennington Road. Lambeth, fairly near Archbishop Temples School. Clayton Buildings were demolished in the late 1970s.
The day out to the seaside was Margate. Dreamland as it was then became Bembom Brothers, and then owned by a Mr Jimmy Godden who sold it in 2004 to a property developer. The rollercoaster is still there, and is the oldest wooden roller coaster in the world.

I must correct you there on your first line, the pupils of Archbishop Temples were used as extras, the boy who played the piano in the assembly was my brothers friend, Gary Campbell, he was also a pupil of Archbishop Temples. I was also one of them and the sports day in the film was not shot at the grounds of Archbishop Temples School. The rest of your information is correct as far as I remember. Whilst filming I even got asked out on a date with Jack Wild, but he was a little short for me but had amazing green eyes!!! Before the film was released for the general public, we all attended a special viewing at the cinema at the Elephant and Castle, just down the road from Archbishop Temples annexe.
shareIt was a few years ago now i happened to follow the marl lester thread and read the submission from someone who had fons memories of the film like me and it just appeared in my memory again and i felt compelled to check out imdb and ... oh my god ... there it is on dvd in china
many thanks guys
ps
i wonder, it is more fondly remembered by the men or women?
I only know a handful of people who have actually seen Melody, and they're all in my family! My Dad and his brothers love it too and I'm a girly so I think it's probably more of a nostalgia thing than whether or not it's a chick flick.
By the way, for those looking for a DVD of the film, I bought mine off some guy in Japan on ebay. The menus are in Japanese but the film's in English and has no annoying subtitles, although I'm sure they must be there to switch on if you can read Japanese.
Ooh, Also how great was it to see David Puttnam get an Oscar, shame he didn't mention Melody tho. There's a nice little letter from him in the DVD sleeve.
I heart Melody.

Dear Rick
Hello, I just thought I would drop you a line about your query
concerning the school building used in the film "MELODY".
The majority of the interior shots for the school used in "MELODY" were filmed
at Colet Court situated at 153 Hammersmith Road,Hammersmith. Whereas the
exterior scenes and the Headmaster's study were all filmed accross the road at
High Masters House. The only exterior scene done at Colet Court being the one
where Latimer looks at Melody from the drinking fountain.
Colet Court at the time I think housed St Paul's primary school prior to it
relocating to Barnes, the pupils used in the film were hired as extras from
Archbishop Temple Grammer in Lambeth Road, at a cost of £5 a day each.
Although Colet Court still stands of course, the part of the building
containing the hall with classrooms going around the side was redeveloped as
offices back in 1980 so most of the interior seen in the film no longer
exists I'm afraid. The only room still in existance is the one used for the
ballet class, though I shouldn't think it looks like that today.
The field used for breaktime and the sports day was the field belonging to the
school which is now occupied by a independant primary school.
I have made an extensive study of the MELODY locations and I have been able
to identify the vast majority of them, so if there are any others you would
like about of please do not hesisate to get in touch.
I hope this has been of some interest of you.
Yours Faithfully
STEVE
Thank you Steve. The information is much appreciated.
shareHey Steve: Thank u for the info. This movie had such an effect in me that I went from Mexico to England (Wimbledon) after graduating from college, to study English. When my money ran out in Wimbledon, I was forced to take a job in Kensington/South Kensington on Gloucester Rd. about 3 blocks from Kensington Palace (this is about 25 yrs. ago). I remember walking in Hammersmith Road a lot. A couple of weeks ago I got the Melody movie because I'm writing a script and there are a couple of scenes, circa 1980 and I wanted to get an idea again of what London looked like back then (sort of). Anyway, here is my question. Is the Hammersmith Road of the Melody movie near Kensington and Kensington Palace or is it in another city or town? Thank u very much for your help.
shareSome time ago i bought this movie on VHS, when on a r&r trip in London, at
that time i even didn't know what a nice movie it was.
I also did some research on the filming locations, and with the help of the A to Z of London i found the location, where the goldfish was let into, on Lambeth, the "basin" was a drinking "thing" for the horses, that where a common sight in the early days, and has/have some markings of the Metropolian Police on it, i then made some photo's of it, but now with Google streetview i can't find the spot anymore, maybe they removed it, or completely rebuild the place ?
Eric.
The horse trough is still there. It sometimes has a flower bed in it these days.
shareWhat about that seat on the beach where the kids were on one side and an older couple was on the other?
