Why hire Klute (spoiler)?
Why would Peter Cable hire Klute to investigate the crime? Was it because he figured Klute would be less capable than the police?
shareHe used Klute to find Arlyn Page, who could connect him to the dead prostitute. The police weren't getting anywhere because Bree wouldn't talk to them.
shareHe could have just not hired anyone. But he wanted to look like a good guy looking after his friend/collegue, maybe it was even expected of him, and he figured he could easily keep ahead of Klute, because
1) he figured he was smarter
2) Klute had to report his findings to him
3) he figured Klute would be too biased to d suspect him
Criminals are often dumb. Look at the people who rush to see Dr. Phil to fail a polygraph and look like guilty idiots, thinking they will strengthen their case.
If he just wanted to hire a PI to look good, then he wouldn't have planted an obscene letter to Bree in Tom's office, nor would he have made fake obscene calls to a woman who could potentially connect him to a murder victim. He could have picked out any prostitute to do that to, but even then why bother?
