Why is the title Klute and not Bree?

OK, I was watching this movie yesterday and god, does it hold up -- masterful.

I was thinking about why the title for a movie which really seems to be Bree's story, is named after the male. Why? Sutherland is terrific but he plays it very subtly and is quite restrained -- it's really an interesting subversion on all those movies named after a character where the titular person is front and center with the dominant performance.

I had a few ideas but couldn't really come up with something that seemed quite right and was wondering what others thought.

Haha, couldn't have put it better myself.

He said it's all in your head, and I said, so's everything--
But he didnt get it.

Well, my humble explanation would be that the SCRIPT really did focus a lot more on Klute than the movie did (yes I read it, I REALLY love this movie).

KLUTE is the surrogate for the audience. We identify with Klute's impassive stoicism and want him to act on behalf of Bree even as Bree Daniel is in an active disassociative state.

KLUTE acts on his impulses and saves someone who isn't sure that she wants to be saved.

Thus KLUTE is the right name for the movie.

I first saw this when i was 13 and have never forgotten it.

Plus, let's face it--Klute sounds like a heck of a lot better than Bree. Bree sounds like an airy, romantic movie, Klute sounds like a tough, police thriller.

Shoulda called it "Goldfarb." Would have been a nice take on "Goldfinger" and instead of Shirley Bassie you could have Jean Stapleton yelling, "Mr. Goldfarb!" Plus, it would keep people watching until the end.

And where does it say that on the "Klute" boards? And why are you stalking me? Rampant trollism.

It was in response to your moronic post, which had nothing to do with "Klute". You only came here because you were stalking my posts. How pathetic!

I reckon 'Klute' ends up being Bree's married name, and the title is a sly acknowledgement of that.

Logan, love talking to you, but you're a real downer sometimes.
