Where was Bree's apartment?

After the early scene when she tricks with the Chicago guy in his hotel, there are shots of her walking home. I can't tell what part of Manhattan it's in. Chelsea? Any ideas, anyone?

Google "Scenes From the City- New York"

It's a site by the Mayor's office and has shooting locations for a good chunk of all American films shot in New York post-1950.

Hell's Kitchen.

Interesting. How do you recognize it as Hell's Kitchen, april?

I was thinking it looks like a street off St. Marks place, around 2nd Ave. But maybe that's just because I know there's a similar funeral parlor around there?

scenes from the city, new York indicates it's hell's kitchen. the link doesn't exist anymore but there was a list indicating the exact locations of various scenes of new York in the movies.

I actually called the Buckley Funeral Home (located two doors down from Bree's walk-up) back around 1980 and they were able to give me the address:

441 W. 43rd Street
New York, N.Y.
10036

The person I spoke to at the funeral home still remembered the filming a decade later and had no problem telling me the address. I actually wrote it down in my own address book, since I never throw those things out, so I'd never lose it. Good thing, too, as who would have thought that I would end up needing it 33 years later?!

Also ... the number you see on the dial of the phone in her apartment would probably be 212-689-7363.

So there you have it, folks. Everything but the actual apartment number.

Note: According to some Google search results, the Buckley Funeral Home is still at the same location: 445 West 43rd Street. Other hits show 424 West 51st Street.

Another location featured in at least one of the disco scenes in the movie was "The Sanctuary", which had previously been a church.

There is some info on it here: http://www.discomusic.com/clubs-more/6885_0_6_0_C/

Here's a slow-mo clip from "Klute", focusing on the disco:
