One of the best performance by an actress ever?

Only upon deeper examination and more viewings did I realize what a superp job Fonda did with her multi-layered performance of Bree. She gives a full-character embodiment of the person, most of the time with very, very subtle touches. An incredible performance which (in my book) would rank among the very best in the history of film!

I don't know about the best, or even *one* of the best. But it *might* be, maybe. And I say this as someone who dislikes her personally, who probably wouldn't shake her hand if I met her. So I think I am comparatively neutral in my judgement.

And I stood where I did be; for there was no more use to run; And again I lookt with my hope gone.

Yes, Fonda gave a SUPERB performance in "Klute". I wish she did more drama or drama thrillers now. She was also good as the alcoholic in the movie with Jeff Bridges...forgot the name. She's just an excellent actress, and she's good in the HBO show with Jeff Daniels. But, there are just too few parts for women her age. Sad.

It certainly is one of the best female performances in memory. That scene where she begins to cry, listening to the tape recording of the murdered call girl, was so powerful and felt so genuine on Fonda's behalf. You could feel her pain and her fear.

It was a stunner of a performance--as was her Gloria in They Shoot Horses, Don't They--which is a slightly better movie than Klute. But Jane's performance is like the cool breeze of the ocean on a summer's day.

The scene where she ditches Klute to go to Frank is stunning. She comes onto a guy just to flex her femininity; mocks another with a glance for looking at her; submits to this pimp's will like an obedient pet but saves a little sneer for Klute. Fonda's Bree Daniels is both powerful and yet pathetic, and as funny as she is infuriating. Incredible performance.
