The ending!!!!
My Tivo cut off right after Ruger (Hackman) shoots Frank and Melissa what happens after???!!! TY so much of you answer.

well, you were unlucky because the movie ends 3 minutes after what you saw. Gene walks to the two, his wife's dead, but Frank is still alive, on his knees. Gene sits and looks at Frank. This one dies, falling right in front of Gene...who lies down and waits.... END
This end is incredible, the madness of Gene pushes him to follow the two lovers, he could have shot them before, but it seems he wanted to die,too...Who can survive the desert back and forth. He will probably die with them.

I agree Nikopol29. For some reason Gene did seem to want to die with them because he had several chances to shoot them but he waited till they were all in the desert and were apparantly doomed. Gene's friends all caught on to his obsession and deserted him. It was ironic that the best one of Gene's friends that hated the violence was the one killed by Reed even though Reed had no knowledge of this.
