Filming Location?

It's obvious this was filmed in NYC; however does anyone know for sure where? I thought perhaps Metropolitan Hospital on the Upper East Side (around 96th street) for at least the exterior shots; I'm wondering if they did the interior shots on location too as the long tracking shots make it seem like they are filming on location and not on a set.

Yes, this was filmed at Metropolitan Hospital. It was a pretty big deal and I remember that Jim Bouton (ex-baseball player) was a reporter for WABC and he got into the hospital pavilion (I think it was being rehabed) they were using for the interior filming. Most of the outside shots are taken from First Avenue looking uptown.

The quality of this movie was really enhanced by the decision to film it in and around a real hospital. It lends an authenticity to the entire movie that just wouldn't be there if it was filmed on a Hollywood soundstage.

Yep, Metropolitan Hospital, I worked there for four years
in the mid eighties, fun times.
We don't get many celebs there and we have a pysch ward.

The Film WAS filmed at Metropolitan Hospital between 2nd & First Ave. The ending was filmed in the main entrance on 97st/96st and 2nd ave.

IT was such a long time ago the neighborhood has changed quite a bit but that area is relatively the same. There are a series of NYCH projects on the west side of 2nd ave which extend up quite a few blocks. North of Metropolitan has seen all the old decrepit buildings torn down replaced with new decrepit ones.

I first saw this at 7 years of age during Easter vacation around the time it was released. Great film by the way. I enjoy George C Scott
films as well as Paddy Chayevsky films. Network was classic !

They filmed on location. In high school I delivered flowers to every hospital in NYC.
