mistake?

i just watched this movie and it's supposed to take place in 1913. However i belive the gun that the govener is holding on the trai when he meets john and juan is a browning(or FN) highpower(GP-35). Wich wasn't even designed until 1925. Can anyone tell me if i'm wrong? or just one of the many gun errors made in most movies.

I realized that the guns in this movie are historically incorrect. Do you think Leone might have done this on purpose? Both John's pistol and machine gun were used during WWII, which is what the film is supposed to reflect. Perhaps the guns were to make the audience understand the connection. It is probably a mistake though.

"Both John's pistol and machine gun were used during WWII, which is what the film is supposed to reflect."

john' pistol was a 1911 or colt government model(same gun one miltary issue one civialian sales but the same thing) which was used in ww2 but was first sold comercially around 1907 so it should be ok for a movie in 1913. not sure about the machine gun though.

One mahcine gun looks to be a Maxim or Vickers. The other looks like an MG42, but the rate of fire is all wrong. The MG42 fires on the order of 900 rouncs per minute, but the sound track doesn't reflect this. It would be interesting to hypothesize about sources of supply for the ammunition, as the Mexican round is 7MM, while the Maxim/Vickers were usually .303 and the MG42 was 8MM (7.92MM)

The M42 was indeed a prop gun developed for the movie

The Maxim though was developed prior to 1900 and available worldwide at the timing timing of this movie, and was available in various calibers

I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney, than driving with Ted Kennedy

"The M-42 light machine gun is DEFINITELY from WWII."

For sure. I'm sure you know it, and with most posters on this thread, but Germany during the Third Reich used the "-YY" designation to mark the year of development, so Maschinengewehr 42 was developed in 1942.

The pistol John uses on the train is an Astra, an Italian pistol used in WW1.

It's not a "mistake". The movie is a work of FICTION, not a documentary, and even if it was, productions have much more complex details to worry about than presenting historically "perfect" props. In fact, they may not even be able to AFFORD authentic props - so what'da gonna do?

Unless the producers put a big disclaimer on their movie that says "the most authentic weapons ever presented", (and none ever have or will), then don't expect it.

Relax, and enjoy the movie.

NOTE: Even though I have a separate post requesting that posts like this not be designated at movie "goofs" and asking that they be placed as message board comments, that does not then negate my opportunity to respond as I wish to above mentioned comments...
