Is it possible?

I just rented this movie on Netflix(and Amc just showed it). I am looking on the discussion boards and eveyone seems to be talking about the same thing. The relationship between Sean/John and who was the traitor.
Is it possible that the Sean/John relationship is just a literary device. John Mallory is Sean and they both share the love of the same woman(Ireland). I don't really know much about "Artsy Fartsy" literature but it would make sense on some levels. John is in a struggle with himself and he meets another person"Juan' Once upon a time in another revolution.

I don't know I am just throwing it out there.

That's a thoughtful anology of the film. My problem was I kept looking at Coburn as perhaps falling in love Steiger as the war went on..hahahahaa..I guess that would have made it too French then..or the fact you couldn't have that in a western in '71..maybe now you could.
