Could anyone please explain?
I keep reading here about John and Sean, some things like Sean is John etc...Am i missing something? Why everyone talks about it like it is something obvious?

Actually it is pretty clear to me:Sean is John's friend, who betrayed him. In the end,we see that they were so close friends that they even <<shared>> the same woman(someone here said that John smiled planing revenge for this but it is definitely false, because his smile doesn't fade, but the picture blurs. Even more, he was not unwilling, as we see, for allowing her to kiss him).
Anyway,it becomes clear that even a friend like Sean, John kills him because he betrayed the Revolution, which is ultimately John's greatest devotion. My point is that i can't see all the debate about the 2 names...

Even this is in favor of what i am saying...He was so obsessed with his friend that he killed, that he said his name....
shareSteiger's character (Juan) ask the name of Coburn's character and Coburn says "Sean" which Juan cannot pronounce so he changes it to "John" the English form of the same Biblical name (which in Spanish is Juan. The Irish form being Sean) so that Juan could pronounce it. The fact he says he is "Sean" and not "John" originally makes me think that he is called Sean, as most folk, traumatised or not, would most likely say their real name first. His friend may be called Sean or John, or Patrick for all we know as it does not tell us in the film.
