What a slow moving paced film
Talk about boredom. How can this movie be rated higher than Cobra? Cobra is non stop action

shareCobra is sort of a remake or Stallones homage of Dirty Harry. It even has the bad guy from Dirty Harry as Cobras superior in the police.
It's a bit trashy, I don't think critics like that, even though I found Cobra to be a little better than Harry.
The French Connection is proper good 70's film making. That's why it's rated higher than 80's schlock Cobra. Who doesn't want to see Stalone cutting pizza with scissors, but Hackman stalking somebody through the streets of New York, and subway trumps that in my opinion. French is better than Bullit to. I found the story a bit messy on that one, and the film making/shots a little bland outside of the driving around San Francisco shots.
I didn't know Cobra was a remake of Dirty Harry. They changed the names in Cobra. Was Dirty Harry also part of the Zombie Squad that Cobra was assigned to?
shareIt's not a direct remake but you can tell Stallone digs Dirty Harry and wanted to make his own version.
Reni Santon is another Dirty Harry actor in Cobra.
I can't get into Bullit. A routine police story, a bit convoluted and uninteresting. TFC is much more interesting and the car chase trumps the one in Bullit no contest, imo.
shareI couldn't get into Dirty Harry either. I thought Bullitt was pretty good.
Try Michael Mann's Thief with James Caan. Legit good movie, great cinematography and soundtrack.
And for more amazing car chases from Friedkin, check out To Live and Die in L.A.
One of the car chases is about 10 minutes long.
I love Thief, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. TLADIL is also great, I've seen both many times.
shareSame. Maybe it's because I prefer Steve McQueen to Clint Eastwood but I enjoy Bullitt more than Dirty Harry as well.
Weirdly, Dirty Harry's aged worse as well I think, despite been made three years after Bullitt.
Because this is a police thriller, not an action flick.
shareAnd all the better for being so, too.
shareOh for sure.
I'm one of those "add assholes" who have a hard time sitting still and cocentrating if things gets to boring. Because let's be honest here; not all films are blessed with no boring parts whatsoever. Modern films often take a cheao route and make shiny things go "boom". Which is fine for a popcorn flick like Avengers. I digress.
The French Connection had me on the edge of my seat from titles to end credits.
It does fall under the category of 'action' but yeah, there's not much action going on in this film. I'll have to agree with the OP, this movie is not very intense. I just didn't care for it and I usually like Hackman.
Other than a pretty good car chase, there's nothing to say about TFC.
And the fact that this beat A Clockwork Orange at the Oscars is a joke...
Yeah, I found it kind of dull. The car chase is still impressive though.
shareYes it's dull. It seems to be one of the most overrated movies of the 70s. Why this one burnt itself into public consciousness and not Busting, we'll never know.
Maybe they had a big marketing budget.
I thought it was okay, the pacing wasn't really the problem.
shareI enjoyed Cobra for what it was but TFC is a police procedural, and a good one.
shareI didn’t find it slow and or boring at all since it’s not long at all.
