The end is a camera pull-back showing the Mercury factory with three huge smokestacks bellowing an immense amount of dark brown smoke, which is polluting the entire town. This scene is essential to the plot, showing the result of the town's greed. If it was cut, that gives credence to the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Big Tobacco" thread that big business is censoring this movie.
