Ironic

Watched this classic about 6 hours ago. While watching it I was perusing the internet and discovered that Jean Stapleton has died yesterday. Sad news while watching this but am really glad I have it on DVD to enjoy and laugh at for years to come. RIP Jean Stapleton/Edith Bunker/Mrs Wappler the mayors wife.

I watched it about two weeks before her death. I really like this movie, unjustly underrated.

I loved the opening song. It's a very melancholy and subversive look at capitalism and American society. They win the prize and everybody is choking on the cigarette smoke, plus the smoke from new factories and industrial smoke stacks. This is laughingly called progress and economic growth in all seriousness. To poison and murder the planet as well as ourselves.
