Did they die?

The characters shot at the end of the movie are ignored once the President arrives. We never see what happens to them. Is it assumed that they died?

reply

Well, the doctor was hit in the leg, so he wouldn't die from that. I like to think the reverend didn't get shot in a vital place. As for Merwyn, who knows?

reply

Yes, it was more a "comedic" type of gunfire than the tragic variety.

I found the scene macabre when first watching it as a kid. Me: Why are all the adults laughing?

reply

Yes, it's very weird to a child when violence is played for laughs. Hopefully this is still the case.

It's nothing for someone to be hurt at a football game, such as when players collide with cheerleaders, and people continue on cheering, so that then was nothing for the townspeople to continue cheering when three guys had been shot.

People died at Woodstock, no one stopped the cncert and sent everyone home.

The funniest cheering would definitely be Pippa Soctt as the reverend's wife, but the way he treated her, why would she really be overly concerned about him?

Plus her laughing scene, she is supposedly with the president.

No one knew who Bob Newhart was, plus he is sitting up, so of the three, his injury may not have been that serious.

You wonder where the doctor's wife was, definitely, or was she even around when he was shot? If she didn't know he'd been shot, she didn't know.

And again, the same could be said for Pippa Scott.

I didn't understand the overall message the film was trying to convey. The contest brought about the town being angry (though not because the contest itself was anything bad) and, later, polluted, but if they hadn't done the contest the town would've disappeared anyway.

reply

That was the point of the movie, "be careful what you ask for,you just might get it". They got the money, the government came back, but at what cost?

Darling, I am trouble of the most spectacular kind!

reply

Why does there have to be a message? There is no message. It's just a very funny story.

I intend to live forever, or die trying.

I think it's showing the flaws of capitalism. Pollution and unhealthy products that kill and poison people do not matter. I see religion being used to control people by those in power (corporations, government, military, the rich). That is another important message.
