One of my many favorite lines...

is when Odie Turman (the old lady anti-Communist) keeps calling things "A big bullsh--!" She uses it as a noun, while most of the time it is used as an adjective to describe a given situation or whatever.

reply

Wasn't she Mother Dexter on Phyllis?

reply

Yup! She was on Phyllis! It was the last acting role she played on TV or film.

reply

I think my favorite is when the lady crossing guard screams at the little girl, "Who the hell do you people think you are?" That lady definitely needs a smoke.

This movie has been playing on the SHOWTIME/MOVIE CHANNEL networks A LOT lately. I think it's an almost lost minor comedy masterpiece. It has yet to see release on DVD, but I'm glad to see that it has gotten some play on cable recently. If it's on, I'll watch it!

reply

Mine is the old patient on the gurney waiting to be operated on.
"for gods sake let him smoke"

I still say that line when I see someone talking about not smoking, and I hate cigarettes!

reply

Yeah, that's another great, funny scene in a movie with a lot of great, funny scenes. When I first saw this movie as a kid, I noticed that the guy on the gurney had an enormous nose.

reply

Though I know it's inappropriate, the tobacco says to the newsman, "Shut the (beep) up...and obviously you can see him say it...and of course EVERY ONE knows what the word is.

What are you going to do about it, Reverend?

The smoke bone is connected to the booze bone, thus sayith the Lord. (I know I'm paraphrasing but you know what I mean).

reply

Ah yes. So many funny moments in this film. While it's not on DVD officially, I think you can stream it via Amazon or Amazon will actually burn the film to a DVD...or something? It would be nice to have this movie in the library to show those people in my peer group who somehow let it get passed them.

reply

A cigarette-deprived Barnard Hughes attempting to say, "Dr. Proctor's Hospital." :D

reply

Ah yes! Finally, another person with great taste weighs in with one of their favorite moments from the film! Now I feel the need to go watch it.

reply

I also remember from the operating table the patient rising up and saying, "For God's sake, let him smoke!"

It's been awhile since I've seen it, so I apologize in advance if I muddled the story up. But my father's favorite line was after Bob Newhart sped up the large clock in the city so that people would start smoking earlier, and thus forfeit the prize money. When the town caught on, Newhart yells out, "Big clocks are never wrong!"

reply

“Why doesn’t he pull himself together?”

We will fight. We will work. We will pray. We will open up our hearts. We will open up our eyes. And we will catch a glimpse of that romantic country, Peru, where are the lovely city of Lima glistens like a thousand jewels set beside the miles of platinum beach which rests like a strand of yellow hair along the lovely blue ocean.
