The first use of the c-word?.

The triva section says that this was the first film to show a condom on screen but was it also the first mainstream film to use the c-word?

reply

I believe so, but don't quote me on that. It was certainly the first mainstream film, but I know for a fact that a Jack Smith (or maybe Ken Jacobs) film from the 1950's used the c-word, but those were underground experimental works so nobody really noticed or cared.

Thanks for replying.

I forgot all about that."Son of a ____ bi&ch!"My mother came in the room while I was watching that whole exchange and said,"You chose this?"Somewhat embarassing, although I felt her.I wanted to reach in the screen and beat the sh it out of Jack Nicholson.Damn, what an a#$hole.

Boys in the Band, The (1970)

Michael: "Donald, you are a real card carrying c--t".

I think it has it beat it terms of what film said it first, fellas.

reply

Superb! That's one of those films that's often mentioned as a cool film but I've never seen it. Thanks for replying.

It appears "Diary Of A Mad Housewife" was a close second. Listing says "Boys In The Band" was March and "Housewife" was in August, both in '70. Must have been quite a year, huh?

My brother and I saw this on cable as kids and used to laugh ourselves sick over all the foul language, needless to say we had no idea what the movie was 'about' really...

Sometimes it's not enough merely to teach. One has to punish as well.

In a scene from Five Easy Pieces (1970), another Nicholson film, Nicholson gets into a car ready to see his father and he has a emotional frenzy and says the C word. This film was filmed in late 1969 though.

And let's not forget that BOYS was a play first - from 1968.

So that use of the c-word actually dates from then.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

When I was a Freshman or Sophmore in college, my Mom and I saw Holy Grail. For some reason (and to be honest, I'm not sure why) she thought that based on that Life of Brian would be appropriate to show one evening with my high school brother and middle school sister, along with both of my grandparents. Then Brian opened the window...... I wasn't sure who was going to have a heart attack first... Grandma, Grandpa, or my Mom!

If Ken Russell's The Devils had been seen as it was filmed, Vanessa Redgrave calls the exorcist the c-word when struggling with him during the first public exorcism scene. The BBFC demanded it be dropped, which Ken complied with and the line was dubbed over with 'runt'. Then a few months later and lo and behold, they're passing all these American c-word films.

It's interesting that only a couple of years earlier the movie In Cold Blood was the first film to use the world "sh it." Morals certainly declined quickly in the late '60's.

Any idea which Jack Smith or Ken Jacobs film used the word, or at least what the film was about or what year it was made/came out? And where did you find that out?

reply

i liked jack's work in this movie. one of his best for sure.
