Couldn't take any more after about 20 minutes

Just too stupid and unbelievable. These guys were college students? They talked like a couple of 12 year olds. Garfunkel telling Candace Bergen, 'it's our third date; I think it's time I felt you up.' Are you freakin' kidding? I stopped the DVR at the point where Jack and Art are walking in the street at night and Art is describing how 'she let me put my hand on her tit.' College men? Not to mention Nicholson is about 35 years old at the time. Maybe I'll watch the rest of it at a later time but very disappointed so far.

I think the film picks up quite a bit after the college scenes which felt disappointing to me, too. It remains talkative, of course, but it becomes much more emotionally interesting and believable. The Nicholson/Ann-Margret relationship is particularly hard-hitting.

Weren't they freshmen? I'd wager most guys their age, at that point in history, didn't get laid until they arrived at college. Independence, y'understand? I mean, I'm sure you were shagging your teachers in grammar school, but not everyone can achieve at that level.

Did you really turn this movie off? I can't imagine doing that. The dialogue and performances are terrific!

Incidentally, what's with people turning off movies before they're finished, then commenting on message boards? "Very disappointed so far"? Is this a work in progress?

Agreed.

The problem with this movie is that it is VERY WELL-WRITTEN...BUT it is, ultimately, the writing of a middle-aged guy looking back at his college years.

The script is really about all those things that the writer meant to say when he was in college but never did.

It doesn't help that the actors are beyond "college age."

Again - GREAT WRITING...only not "age-appropriate"....

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

Yeah, 'those guys' were college students.....in the late 1940s. Things were different back then. College age guys weren't terribly mature then.....not that the ones NOW are really mature; just more worldly.
