Where'd the horse come from?

When Jake leaves the train station, he's riding his horse, tethering a pack mule and two horses. When he meets Sam Sharpnose, all of a sudden he has an extra horse for him. Where did that come from?
...And another thing,
After he's reunited with his two sons, all four are on horses. What did they do with all the stuff the horses were carrying originally?

I still liked the movie, though.

He leaves the station riding his horse, a pack mule, and 3 pack horses. 4 horses one mule. So He, Sharp nose, James and Michael all have horses when the Vehicles get ambushed. As for the stuff, they left what they couldn't carry behind, which is why they needed more food (shot the deer for meat) shortly after they got underway again.
