An interesting thought.

The million dollar ransom in 1909 would equate to about $24 Million today. In 1971, when the movie was made, it would have been worth about $4.5M. That would have been a huge sum back in 1909. In reality, I wonder how long it would have taken to gather that much cash in a far off Texas town?

That box was ALWAYS filled with paper. If this family WAS worth millions, they sure didn't have it at the ranch house. the Grandmother and certainly Jake were NEVER going to give those people any money.

I doubt a 1909 outlaw understood that the big ranchers didn't keep their money on the ranch or even in the local nank. The family was worth millions so they figured it would be easy to get the cash.
