Ostentious display

I love the duke. I love his movies. Big Jake is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. After watching it quite a number of times, one thing concerns me. In the scene showing the group arriving at Escondero (boom town, oil), Big Jake is asked why they are just riding right up main street, in broad daylight, guns out, being so obvious. He then explains why they are putting on such an "ostentious" display. Go ahead and watch it again, that is what he says. What I am wondering is, is that Jake mangling the language, or the duke? Was it in the script, improvised, an error? Anyone have any idea? Has this already been brought up and discussed? In any event, no big deal, but I do wonder.
