Was Edwina his favourite?

Do you think McBurney had genuine feelings for Edwina?

I know he flirted with all the ladies and girls to charm his way into their good graces so they wouldn't turn him over to the Confederate patrols. It was a matter of survival. Was Edwina just another "survival ticket" to him, or did he actually feel some sort of special attraction or connection with her?

When he sat down to talk with her on the porch that one afternoon before her class, he sounded like he was about to propose marriage.

I'd say Edwina was his favorite because she was less scheming than the others, but I don't think his feelings were genuine. I suspect Edwina was his lifeboat, but of course it wasn't enough.

Edwina was the only one who was willing to help him at the end. She was innocent and gullible in ways the others weren't. The others were more cunning and conniving like McBee himself was. McBee was still in enemy territory. The chase may have proved more attractive than the catch in the long run.

I suspect they both wanted to get out of there and saw each other as the way out. I could be wrong of course.
