It's little-seen. Until 1982,
The Beguiled was Eastwood's only flop in America. Until 1989, it was one of only two Eastwood flops (
Honkytonk Man, another highly underrated film, being the other).
This movie very entertaining as well as being a very intelligent analysis on human nature. Monogamy and promiscuousity, indulgence and chastity, revenge and forgiveness, and most of all ethics. Very fascinating.

Ironically. It's my favorite Eastwood film.
And full of that shrouded, melancholy, early-'70s zeitgeist.
