Would've been better if he chose the hot girl Carol
instead of the ugly and annoying school teacher
shareinstead of the ugly and annoying school teacher
shareYes, and he probably would've saved his leg too.
shareHe did choose Carol. All she was offering him was sex and that's what he got. On the other hand his feelings for the schoolteacher were those of real love, not lust, which delve deeper into the soul than feelings of lust.
shareMcB had no feelings of love for Edwina.
He was snowing most of the women - trying to save his ass from the rebels.
He was trying to be something to each of them - but he went too far for his own good. Actually, Carol, he was just trying to sleep with because, well, who wouldn't.
But the others, he was trying to fill gaps in their lives, making them see in him what they were missing - and hoping that that would make them want to keep him around.
The marriage announcement at the dinner table, right before he dies, is a last-ditch effort to save himself. There is no love from him. The man is sociopath.
Great film.
I don't think it's fair to call McB "sociopathic". Do you remember the setting of the film? Civil War Louisiana. That's the equivalent of an American being held captive in modern day Iran. When you find yourself fighting for your life in enemy territory, human nature dictates that you do WHATEVER IT TAKES to survive and save your own ass. Is the will to live sociopathic? Is survival instinct sociopathic? He could have easily taken the gun and killed every single girl in the house, but nooooooo - he chose to act nice to them. Even if it was truly for his own benefit and nothing more, it's FAR from sociopathic...
shareActually I thought he chose for either Martha or Edwina, *not* for Carol. Carol surprises him at the staircase when he was on his way to Martha or Edwina (he already passed the stairs to Carol's room). When he was surprised by Carol, he went to bed with her, because continuing his original plan would cause a scene, and in the end he did want to have sex of course.
sharecoz carol's the type ya bang and edwina's the type ya marry you cant no ho into a house wife
in todays news paris hilton has now made it illegal to weigh no more than 108 pounds.
...and the incestual Martha is the one you kill. Haha. Did The Beguiled secretly invent the game bang, marry, or kill?
shareDitto!!!
shareedwina and carol obviously represent different sides of the eastwood character's personality. and, he swings back and forth between them like a pendulum as you'd expect. this dark/light thing is pretty common in southern gothic stories about sexuality. it couldn't have been handled better, i don't think. kudos to siegel on the job he did with this material, which easily could've sunk into tv melodrama territory.

I agree! thats uncalled for, Elizabeth Hartman was NOT ugly. she seemed a nice lady and was pretty, I thought. wholesome pretty, Carol was a tramp. a lusty little girl. and Eastwoods character was a lusty letch.

Yeah i heard about that to. I remember reading a paragraph saying that the affair got so heated that friends of the eastwood family thought she was going to break up the marriage. It ended because of an incident or something i can't remember
shareEdwina ugly, you have to be kidding. Elizabeth Hartman was one "hot" redhead at the time. She had a timeless ethereal beauty that was in my opinion much more attractive than the Carol character. Redheads are HOT!
shareAttractiveness is the most subjective of topics, but in my personal opinion - Edwina was homely and 100% average at best. Not ugly, not attractive at all. I have also looked at other films where she didn't play such a "plain Jane" character, and as I assumed, she looked absolutely average in all of them. However, her onscreen presence was undeniable and her untimely death due to depression/suicide was tragic. RIP Edwina, say hello to McB for me...
shareWatch Elizabeth Hartman as the blind girl in A Patch of Blue in 1965. She was great in that film, and she was nominated for an Academy Award too.

"The man is sociopath"
Exactly! And sociopaths are mirrors. They will mirror back to you what they think you want to see in them to get what they want from you. McB did that with each and every individual in that house. It worked on everyone with the exception of the slave, who saw through that bull$hit from the get go.
Carol would give him some poon and that was about all she could offer. Edwina was more of a meal ticket further on into the future.

Perfect summation into that man's character. Isn't that scary to even know a person like that?
The Devine Genealogy Goddess!
Here's a statistic that will really freak you out, 4 percent of any population is considered sociopathic. Think about everyone you know. Your neighbors, co-workers, etc. at least one of them is sociopathic.
The Inuit had a cure for sociopaths. They would go on hunting expeditions. Four go in. Three come out. Understand? It may sound harsh but in tribal society a sociopath can literally destroy the entire tribe.

there are more psychopaths than sociopaths.....sociopaths just use people and you can only use people that let you use them..
sharePsychopath and sociopath are interchangeable terms. Back to Psych 101, kid.

That couldn't be any more inaccurate. If you are not aware of being used, you are not "letting" yourself be used. It's called manipulation and we are ALL susceptible.
share"The Inuit had a cure for sociopaths. They would go on hunting expeditions. Four go in. Three come out. Understand?"
Except in those cases where four went in and only one came out. ;-)
Elizabeth Hartman was purposely not wearing much makeup in this movie to fit the look of the portrayed time period. In real life, she was a very beautiful woman.
