He gets punished for being so handsome and lovey dicey with any attractive lady on screen? It seems like he and Don Siegel were trying to put a spin on his archetypical, yet still effecting and entertaining tough guy role.

And other roles like this where Clint plays it a little different from the usual Blondie/Dirty Harry type?

I don't know who told him otherwise, but they lied. He has "sung" at the end of a couple movies and they're all terrible. He should just stick to acting and general bad ass-ery.
