Called Bananas because..

...its referring to a Banana Republic perhaps?

I may be completely wrong, I haven't seen this film in years.

San Marcos can also offer locusts of all races and creeds.

Actually he says they're available at "popular prices," which always threw me until I realized that that means discount.

From Wikipedia: Banana republic is a pejorative term for a country that is politically unstable, dependent on limited agriculture (e.g. bananas), and ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy, and corrupt clique.

So a banana republic does not necessarily export bananas. This is a generic slang term. If you like to an article, you could at least refer to it properly. Anyway this meaning completely explains the title.

Apparently, according to Woody Allen, it's called BANANAS because there aren't any bananas in the movie. (They're discussed, not shown.) :)

Actually I think the reason is (as the movies seems to be based on the book 'Don Quichote USA' by R. Powell)that in the book the main character Arthur Peabody Goodpasture wanted to grow Bananas on San Marcos.
