From Wikipedia: Banana republic is a pejorative term for a country that is politically unstable, dependent on limited agriculture (e.g. bananas), and ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy, and corrupt clique.
So a banana republic does not necessarily export bananas. This is a generic slang term. If you like to an article, you could at least refer to it properly. Anyway this meaning completely explains the title.

Actually I think the reason is (as the movies seems to be based on the book 'Don Quichote USA' by R. Powell)that in the book the main character Arthur Peabody Goodpasture wanted to grow Bananas on San Marcos.
