Having the female scientist be an older woman instead of some unconvincing bubble headed babe is one of the best things about the movie. It's a refreshing change from Hollywood formula.

Kate Reid was deliberately cast. The producers wanted a mixed-gender cast, and also wanted to avoid the kind of casting decision that placed Raquel Welch in 'Fantastic Voyage'(1966). Believe it or not, this kind of cliché gets real old real fast.

You are looking at this in a 2014 mindset. Remember this was the 70's

While I thought the casting for the female was great, it's was all taken away by making her obstinate and obnoxious. Really, I cringed every time she opened her mouth. What a wasted opportunity to have her as much of a contributing member as the rest of the team. Then, her behavior made it all the much worse when she blew the research which indirectly very nearly got them all killed.
